Wouldn’t it be great to know that any time spent in the gym was delivering you results and getting you that much closer to your goals? The truth is, not all workouts are created equally. However, there are some known techniques for getting the most out of each workout. By utilizing these techniques you’ll achieve quicker and more noticeable results over time.
Check out the following workout tips to get the most out of your workout routine every time:
Workout Tip 1: Use Challenging Resistance
In order to get the most from each rep it’s important to challenge your muscles, and to not to simply go through the motions. If you are able to complete up to 15 repetitions easily, then the weight is just too light. On the flip side, if you aren’t able to perform an exercise for at least 8 reps through its full range of motion, and find yourself cheating on form, then the weight is too heavy.
The correct weights will feel challenging by your last few repetitions but won’t force you to sacrifice form.
Workout Tip 2: Change Up Your Routine
You may have noticed that most people do the same handful of favorite exercises each time they visit the gym. Maybe you’ve been doing the same exercise routine as long as you can remember—if it isn’t broken then don’t fix it, right?
The truth is that even exercise routines have expiration dates. After about 4 weeks an exercise routine can begin to lose its effectiveness. That’s why with my clients I am making changes and adjustments to their routines every 1-4 weeks to keep their body challenged, their interest peaked, and their progress expedited.
Workout Tip 3: Always Warm Up
Most people consider warm up time to be a waste of time—they’d rather jump right into the routine. What they don’t realize is that a good warm up will allow you to perform at a higher intensity during the meat of the workout, which produces even greater results.
The warm up is intended to increase your body temperature, and get your mind and body prepped for the workout. This increase in body temperature will help prevent injury by reducing muscle resistance. Your warm up should last 5-10 minutes.
Workout Tip 4: Use Proper Lifting Form
Let’s face it, gyms are filled with people performing exercises with terrible form. Some of this may be lack of knowledge, not paying attention, or they are pushing themselves beyond their physical capabilities. Lifting with improper form almost always results in injury.
Take the time to achieve proper form (reduce the weight, work with a professional, do your research) by doing so you’ll avoid injury and will reap the full benefit from each exercise.
Workout Tip 5: Use Exercises that Are Specific to Your Goals
There are some exercises that are better than others when it comes to delivering results. Some are better for burning fat, building muscle, or developing strength. Knowing which ones are more effective and deliver more bang for your buck can also make a huge impact on your time spent at the gym and the results you can see from those workouts.
Workout Tip 6: Never Workout Alone
People who exercise alone are less challenged, less accountable and therefore, typically see fewer results. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Why rush to the gym if no one is there waiting for you? Why push yourself if no one is watching? It is true that exercising alone is not nearly as effective as working out with someone.
My clients have experienced that the best way to avoid injury and to see results from their workouts is to work with me. It is my job to help my clients achieve results by teaching them how to properly eat throughout the day given their lifestyle and goals, creating workouts that are challenging, safe, and effective for their fitness level and geared towards getting them to their fitness goals.
